What kind of doctor are you?
Many people think of a chiropractor as a pain or spine doctor. We have good success with alleviating pain but it is a side effect of what we actually do. Our primary concern is the nervous system that controls all aspects of our health and function.
Pain and symptoms are not indicators of health, but indicators that the body can no longer adapt to a stressor or dysfunction in the body.
When the brain senses an injury or potential injury to the nervous system, it will attempt to stabilize or splint the area with the goal of protection. Depending on where the injury is it may look like a spasm, pain, restriction of motion, swelling or all of these. Also, depending on the location, various symptoms can be displayed: skin pain, muscle pain, radiating pain and so forth.
Therefore, chiropractors seek the cause of the symptoms and by correcting it gives the body the opportunity to heal and correct itself as it should. If this cause is in the spine, it is called a vertebral subluxation, which denotes an area that is either out of position or not moving as it should, or both.
It makes sense to me to address the cause and not just cover up the symptom. Now, sometimes removing the pain will help us rest so we can heal. If we have a long-term solution to fixing the cause, short term pain reduction can be helpful. But, not if removing the pain makes a patient just go out and reinjure themselves! The pain is an indicator, not the problem.
The big question I ask when assessing each patient is: Why is the body NOT able to handle this? For example, let’s take a patient with carpal tunnel syndrome in the right hand.
The carpal tunnel is a passage way in the wrist that the median nerve travels through to reach the hand. This nerve supplies control to and feedback from the thumb, index and middle finger and part of the ring finger. This nerve originates from fibers of the C5-T1 nerves (at the base of the neck), travels out of the neck, through the shoulder, down the arms, in-between or through muscles, through the carpal tunnel and into the hand. Therefore, there are a few places for that nerve to be impinged and only releasing the correct one will resolve the pain and weakness and allow the body to heal.
How long does a chiropractic case take? The answer depends on a couple of variables.
How much does a chiropractic case cost? The cost will vary depending on your insurance, discount program or your condition. As you know this has gotten more complicated over time and there are many plans and regulations. We will always try to understand your situation and let you know costs ahead of time to the best of our ability.
The first chiropractic patient was treated in 1895. Dr. D.D. Palmer performed the first chiropractic spinal adjustment on his deaf janitor, Harvey Lillard. Lillard‘s hearing returned and Palmer thought he had discovered a cure for deafness. But as patients with digestive troubles, sciatica, menstrual trouble, migraine headaches, epilepsy, heart problems, back pain and many other conditions responded to spinal care, Palmer realized that he had discovered something more far-reaching indeed.
Nearly everyone eventually suffers spinal nerve stress and so is affected by subluxations. It is a “hidden epidemic” and it is for that reason that we all need to have our spines checked by a doctor of chiropractic every once in a while, just as we get our eyes, teeth and blood pressure checked! Even babies have stress coming into this world.
Pain and symptoms are a check engine light telling us the body needs help.
Pain is NOT the problem. It is an indication that a problem exists! Much like how the check engine light in your car tells you something is affecting the performance of your car, pain and symptoms tell us there is something wrong in the body that needs to be addressed. Your chiropractor knows how to read the signs the body is sending to get to the cause and fix the problem so you can operate more efficiently.
What conditions or symptoms can you treat? The chiropractor’s goal is to make sure the nervous system, which controls the function of the body, is working effectively. If a nerve is not able to work effectively, symptoms can develop such as colds, ear infections, PMS, spinal or disc problems, arthritis, insomnia, stress, vision problems, headaches, allergies, bed wetting, colic, high blood pressure-the list is long! The goal of chiropractic care is not the treatment of disease but rather the removal of spinal nerve issues (vertebral subluxation complex) restoring the body’s ability to heal itself. The above list may seem long, as though chiropractic were a panacea. The truth is that most textbooks list over two thousand conditions that can be helped through chiropractic and acupuncture. Please be mindful of the fact that chiropractic care is not like one drug used for one condition, but on the contrary, it is a complete healing art within itself working to correct health problems within systems by restoring normal function: nervous, circulatory, digestive, respiratory, eliminatory, reproductive, hormonal, musculature, etc.
You can receive chiropractic treatments even if you are under medical care. Having normal nerve function is important no matter what other types of care you’re receiving. You
can have your spinal column checked for vertebral subluxations by a doctor of chiropractic and still visit a doctor of homeopathy, naturopathy, osteopathy or medicine. M.D.’s and other healers cannot tell if you’re suffering from spinal nerve stress (vertebral subluxations) and are not trained in correcting it.
We believe everyone can benefit from a healthy spine. Spinal health is important for your overall well-being. It is the communication grid, like a telephone company, that allows the body to control the proper function in the body. Similarly, acupuncture is like the power grid that allows for animation of the body’s tasks.
A healthy spine affects all of the activities that we do for health and longevity: nutrition, sleep and rest, exercise, work, and mental status. Having a healthy nervous system brings efficiency to all of these other areas.
Do you and your family have a properly functioning nervous system? Only a chiropractic spinal checkup can tell.
